Spiced Hibiscus Tea aka Zobo- weightloss tea
As I have been learning about Nigerian cuisine, one of the recipes I was most drawn to is called Zobo. A spiced hibiscus tea with as many variations as there are regions in West Africa – probably many more. We take the dried hibiscus leaves and steep them in water with any myriad of spices and fruits. I even came across a recipe which added dried chili flakes!
But i couldn't wait until all my hibiscus flowers to dry up, so i went to my terrace garden found out a freshly bloomed Hibiscus flower, removed only the petals and started to Make a tea.
The hibiscus flavor really came through and was accentuated by the spices.
Hibiscus tea has been known to prevent hypertension, lower blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels, keep your liver healthy, help with menstrual cramps, help with depression, aid digestion and help with weight management. Its rich in Vitamin C, contains minerals such as flavonoids and has laxative properties.

Ingredients
- Water - 1 glass
- Hibiscus petals washed - 4
- Star anise pod- 1
- Cloves -2
- Cinnamon stick - 1/2 inch
- Orange - 2
- Raw honey - 1 spoon
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a medium pot.
- Over high heat boil all.
- Remove pot off the heat and let it sit for 10-15 min, allowing the tea to cool slightly.
- Serve with a side of honey to taste.
